skincare, hydration, kate somerville, tarte maracuja, tatcha oil

One of my goals for 2017 is to focus more on skincare. My skincare routine has always consisted of soap & water, and although I hear it’s a cardinal sin it works fine for me. As of recently, I’ve been wanting to do a little bit more to give my skin some oomph. My desert dry skin is always in desperate need of moisture so I figured a proper skincare routine could do just that.

Last year I bought the Clinique three step system and it broke me out terribly. The system requires you to use it twice a day and it comes with a cleanser, toner, and moisturizer; which I think was just too much for my skin. I got rid of it and have been looking for a replacement ever since. When I started researching on YouTube I noticed that everyone’s routine was either too long or required too many products. I knew I didn’t want to spend 15 minutes cleaning my face every day, so I wanted products that could be multipurpose.

skincare, kate somerville, cleanser, moisturizer

My first stop was Sephora, where a lady sold me on the Kate Somerville goat milk cleanser. I liked it because it was nonfoaming, which dries out my naturally dry skin, and it also worked as a moisturizer. It didn’t leave my skin feeling tight or stripped like most cleansers do. I went back and purchased the full bottle and so far it’s just O.K. I’ve been using it for a couple of months and for the $35 price tag I don’t think it does anything spectacular.

Tarte maracuja oil, cleansing oil, skincare

Next purchase was something to help hydrate my skin. I’ve tried lotion after lotion but nothing that feels like it really seeps into my skin. I’ve heard rave reviews about the Tarte Maracuja and Its been on my wishlist for a while. When I found out that it came in an affordable travel size, I decided to purchase.  A little bit of this product goes a long way, so the small size will last a while. I typically apply this right after removing my makeup with the Tatcha Cleansing Oil.

I’ve been on the hunt for is a daily exfoliant so if you have any suggestions let me know!

Have you used any of the above products?

Let me start off by saying I NEVER shop like this. The most money I’ve spent at Sephora at one time has been $60. I’m what I like to call a cautious buyer. I read reviews, sample, buy the smallest version and then after I’ve worn and tested it for several months I finally buy the full size. So believe me when I say this is a tad bit out of character for me but nonetheless I’m really happy with everything I got!

Ps: grab a snack, this post is gonna be a long one.

makeup, primers, too faced hangover, smashbox primer, makeup forever mattyfying primer, dior everlasting

Primers

  1. Too Faced Hangover Primer: I have dry skin, so this was a no brainier. I currently use the Smashbox hydrating primer but I’m always in need of more!
  2. MUFE Mattifying Primer: you’re probably thinking “didn’t she just say she has dry skin?”. I do but I still get a little oily in my t-zone. I like to use a mattifying primer for when I’m using heavy liquid foundations, or on days when I need my makeup to last me all day.
  3. Dior Everlasting Primer: I’ve never bought high-end makeup before, but this one was a must. It’s been on my mind ever since I sampled it months ago. My motto is if you’ve thought about it for longer than a week then it’s your due diligence to buy it!
  4. Tatcha Skin Mist: This is a YouTube made me buy it. I love dewy skin and I’ve heard this is the ultimate skin mist. The price tag was hefty but worth the buy.
  5. Smashbox Primer Water: Running low on my Mac Fix plus, so I thought I would try this in the meantime. Bought the travel version just in case I don’t like it.

makeup, foundation, makeup forever, liquid foundation, powder foundation

Foundations

  1. MUFE Ultra HD: As I’ve mentioned in this post I have a hard time finding my foundation shade. MUFE is known for its shade range, and Sephora color match sent me this way.
  2. Nars Velvet Matte Tint (returned): I ended up returning this item but for the short time that I had it, I loved it. Unfortunately, I don’t like foundations with SPF (the flashback kills me), so I swapped it out for MUFE ultra HD. I may repurchase it later but right now it’s too hard to tell what my summer shade would be.
  3. MUFE Duo Mat Powder: I haven’t found a good powder foundation in a while and I’ve heard good things about this one (again from YouTube). I’m lacking on powder brushes so I haven’t really used this yet, but the shade match is perfect!

Concealer

Sephora Concealer Palette: This is something I haven’t seen anyone raving about. In the midst of the color correcting hype, I think this may have flown under the radar. Either way I love it! Full review coming soon.

Eyeshadow

KVD Shade and Light Eye Palette: I’m a little late on the bandwagon with this one but it really wasn’t on my radar until a few days ago. I like KVD (since the days of her doing tattoos on reality tv) and when I can support her brand I do.

abh, makeup, highlighters, becca champagne pop, fragrence, viktor & rolf,

Highlighters

  1. ABH That Glow: one can never have too many highlighters. I went into Sephora every day of the VIB sale and finally found this on the last day!
  2. Becca Champagne Pop: super late on picking this up but who can resist Becca highlighters. Officially the third in my collection!

Eyeliner

  1. Benefit They’re Real Push-up Liner: I’ve heard this liner was the key to a good cat eye. Since I have yet to master it I’m hoping this liner will help.
  2. Tarteist Liner: This was sampled a while back and I loved the lasting power. The brush that they give you with the liner is amazing as well!

Mascara

Too Faced Better Than Sex: Just a re-purchase. Favorite mascara ever. I even asked the Sephora sales associate if there was another mascara she would choose and she said better than sex was hard to beat!

Perfume

Viktor & Rolf Flowerbomb: Since my dance with marc jacobs daisy was a bust, I wanted to go for a warmer scent. I bought this on a whim because the sign in front of it said best seller. So far I LOVE IT.

What did you buy during the Sephora VIB Sale? Do you have any of the above products?

I was blessed with great skin. It’s as dry as the Mohave desert but aside from its dullness, it is healthy. I don’t have any scarring, hyperpigmentation, bags or wrinkling around my eye. The worst thing I have is a few freckles and a dimple –which I like to think adds a little character. Even though my skin is naturally healthy I still have to work at making sure it stays that way. I’ve listed a few things that I currently do to keep my skin clear!

DRINK WATER

I’m sure you’ve heard this one a million times but I promise you it works. I actually don’t like water, and I certainly can never get through the necessary “8 glasses” a day, but ever since I’ve started to get in shape I’ve made more of a conscious effort. One of the ways I love staying hydrated is to infuse it with fruit (for cold drinks) or add lemon and honey (for warm drinks). I recently bought a thermos mug and it’s been great for my morning cup of water. I can get in 160z before 10am, not to mention the water that I drink during my morning workout.

HAVE NO MAKEUP DAYS

I love no makeup days. Something just feels wrong about lying around in my sweats with a full face of makeup on. I wear makeup during the work week, but since my weekends are typically spent with close friends and family I like to use that as a time to let my skin have a break. I prefer light makeup as is, but if your someone who likes a full glam face everyday then a break is definitely needed. You also end up cleaning your face even more, stripping it of its natural oils because you’re trying to scrub the heavy makeup off. If you need to exfoliate then by all means do so, but it shouldn’t be because of an overuse of makeup!

STOP SAMPLING SKIN CARE PRODUCTS

As beauty bloggers, or just a girl who likes to watch YouTube it can be easy to get sucked into different skincare hypes. I will admit that even I’ve fallen for this a few times (current regret is the glamglow youthmud mask) and it’s ended up causing more damage to my skin than good. My skincare routine is ivory soap. That’s it folks! I wash my face everyday with plain ole ivory soap. Once a week I wear a hydrating mask (another “YouTube made me buy it” product) and it’s been doing wonders during the cold season. But the point is once you find something that works stick with it! My suggestion would be to have one holy grail item for each issue you have and use it as needed. For me during that time of the month I like to use Sephora’s Green Tea Mask to help get rid of the pimples.

Keep anything you put on your face clean

Makeup girls this one is for you! I will openly say that cleaning makeup brushes is something I don’t do as often as I should and my skin has definitely paid the price. I used to keep my brushes out on my desk, my very “prone to getting dust” desk. The dust would settle in my powder brushes and I sometimes would even notice it until after I had used the brush. I now store them in my vanity desk but the point is make sure they stay clean (and that goes for you beauty blenders too). Another good one is changing your pillow cases. Drool, plus old makeup, plus dead hair and whatever else could possibly be on your pillow is a recipe asking for a pimple. Anything that touches your face on a consistent basis should be as clean as possible!

What do you do to keep your skin clear and healthy?

cover fx custom drops., foundation, makeup

I’m the type of girl who spends hours in Sephora swatching different foundations, only to leave empty handed. Everything I find is either too full coverage, not the right shade- which might I say there are a lot of companies that are not very brown girl friendly, or the foundation simply doesn’t have any wow factor. Either way, I always end up disappointed, or mad at myself for even trying. My current foundation collection is so wimpy I shouldn’t even call it a collection. I have the Nars Tinted Moisturizer and the Luminous All Day Weightless foundation. I’ve had other foundations but none worth keeping. I prefer light coverage and I can never seem to find the right shade and weight to my liking until I discovered the custom cover drops which have seriously been a dream come true.

WHAT IS IT

The Cover FX Custom Cover Drops is a bottle of pure pigment that can be mixed with other oils, lotion, primers etc. Anything that you would normally put on your face to prep and prime can be mixed with the cover drops. They have 4 infusion drops specifically made to blend with the cover drops but they are pricey ($44) and since you can mix it with anything it’s probably better to stick to your normal primer or just plain ole lotion. If you want light coverage the recommended drops are 1-2, Medium to full is 2-3 drops. Essentially the more coverage you want the more drops you should use. The shade range is phenomenal, it’s offered in 25 shades so you have plenty of options. I actually had to sample two different shades since I couldn’t tell which one would match me properly.

HOW I USE IT

I’ve mixed mine with several different things. The first was the hydration primer by Smashbox. I liked this combination but it made my skin feel overly wet. It was as if I added too much moisture to my face. I have also used it with lotion and got the same result. I decided to try using it with mattifying primers and that was when I got the best results. I have dry skin so I thought using a liquid foundation with a hydrating primer would be exactly what my skin needed but instead, the combination made me look too oily. I tried mixing it with a sample of the Dior everlasting primer which I mention in my haul a few weeks ago, and it was my favorite foundation look! Unfortunately, the primer is almost $50 and I didn’t want to get addicted to a product that was above my normal budget.

I’ve also used it with Makeup Forever Step One Mattifying Primer, and the Custom infusion drops that are meant to go with the cover drops. I liked the MUFE primer although it wasn’t as good as the Dior one, it is a more affordable option. The infusion drops were a total bust for me, I didn’t like the smell of them and they were too oily. But I’m also not into applying oils to my face so if you are then it may be a good choice for you.

PROS

Creating your own coverage: I love to have the freedom to tailor my foundation to my needs. For days when I’m going to work I wear it lightweight, and on days when I’m going out for dinner or dressing up I can make it fuller coverage.

Shade Range: The options are really endless. I can easily find both my winter and summer shade in this line. If you are a makeup artist this would be good to add to your kit.

CONS

Not Travel-Friendly: Since you have to essentially “make your foundation” it can get a bit messy. I mix mine in a small little cup, but this isn’t the most accessible for a girl on the go. You can mix it on your hand but I think that’s messy and you end up wasting the product.

Pure Pigment: The fact that is pure pigment means it doesn’t have a lot of the additives that normally make foundation have some lasting power. The foundation stays very well but only if you have the right mixture. Once you’ve figured out your perfect combination then you’ll love it but it does take some tweaking and trying new things.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Overall I love it. The versatility I have with this is amazing and exactly what I’ve been looking for. If you are someone who struggles with some of the same things I have then this would be a perfect option for you. If you don’t like the product at first glance then I recommend trying it with a different base. I promise you it makes all the difference!

What’s your favorite foundation right now?

ten minute makeup routine, makeup look, mac blush, too faced mascara, sephora, colourpop ultra matte,

Every girl that does her makeup needs to have an ” I can’t leave my face bare but I don’t have enough time for full glam routine” or in other words something that takes less than 10 minutes to do. I think any good routine starts with great healthy skin. If you want to be able to leave the house in a hurry you need a good base to work with.

When Im in a rush the first step I skip is applying foundation; simply because I’ve taken care of my skin that I dont actually need foundation. I head straight for my fit me concealer since its creamy, blendable and the most natural looking out of my collectionI try to stay away from anything that is too light because it takes more time for me blend out.

Next up are my eyebrows, which I spend all of a half of a second on. I was blessed with great eyebrows, shout-out to my mom for that one, and so I usually only need a quick run through with my spoolie and I’m done. If I had more time I would do my full brow routine but since this is all supposed to be under 10 minutes I like to focus my attention on more pressing things.

The only thing I do with my eyes is apply mascara, two to be exact. I’m still learning how to work with eyeshadow and it’s not something I have time to play with when I’m in a rush. Sometimes I apply eyeliner but for the most part, I stick with just the mascara.

Now comes the easy part, applying blush and highlighting. My favorite everyday blush is raizen by Mac and I reach for it whenever I’m short on time. It looks great on my skin, and it’s extremely buildable so I never have to worry about adding too much and then being stuck with having to fix all the extra blush on my face. My go to highighter is the cream version of Becca Opal. It is such a pretty color and it has the just the right amount of shine to give you a natural glow. I like using the cream because it sets into my skin easily and I dont have to worry about getting powdery glitter all over my face.

To warm up my face a bit I use my mac blush in blunt. I prefer my cream contour kit by ABH but it requres me to use mutiple brushes and takes a while to blend properly. I apply mac blunt on the hollows of my cheeks, my forehead and under my chin. After that I apply a lipstick (my current favorites are the ultra matte lips by colourpop) and I’m all set to go!

Which products do you use for your quick everyday makeup routine?
